Sea turtle suspended in rock, rescued

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — An adult sea turtle that came to the beach to nest was found lodged in a crevasse and unable to move or free herself.

The white turtle required rescuing when she was found stuck in a rock crevasse in a nesting area of the island. It appears that after she laid her eggs she was attempting to return to the sea, but fell into a natural opening in a large rock and ended up trapped.

The turtle was completely suspended and unable to move. Officials from the Federal Maritime Zone Zone (Zofemat) managed to free the large female and release her into the sea. To date, 328 nests have been recorded on the island.
