Tulum, Q.R. — Barriers to help contain sargasso at Tulum beaches have been installed. The installation of the barriers began Friday at Mezzanine Beach, which now run approximately 120 linear meters.
Mauro Domínguez González of the company in charge of the installation, says there are several points along the coast of Tulum where the structures will be installed. The first placement was made Friday with other places including Akumal, Punta Allen, Punta Piedra and beaches of the National Park.
He added that they will also place the sargasso barriers along the coasts of Mahahual. Approximately eight kilometers of coastline will see the barriers placed in the form of an inverted trapezoid in 30-meter sections.
During the lifespan of the barriers, the company is responsible for removing the built-up sargasso from the netting with the dumping destination determined by the Secretaría de Ecología y Medio Ambiente (Sema).
Domínguez González says they will spend the weekend moving forward with the placement of the barriers along the coast. He added that by the end of October, the entire coast will be outfitted with the sargasso collection barriers, just in time for the arrival of tourists.
