Riviera Maya experiences warmest Christmas in decade

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – According to local meteorologists, Christmas 2015 was the warmest of the last 10 years, averaging a minimum day time temperature of 27C (78F).

Luis Antonio Morales Ocaña, head of the department of Climatología y Meteorología de Protección Civil de Solidaridad, said the wake-up temperature on both Christmas Eve day and Christmas were 20C, temperatures that are considered hot for sunrise.

Ocaña explained that “This year we saw a complete change in the winter thermal issues for the Yucatan Peninsula and for Quintana Roo. Cold fronts have arrived in the Campeche area changing the thermal conditions that have left our area with an unusual heat at this time of the year.”

He said that these types of weather conditions for this geographical area are in contrast with the minus five degree temperatures that are occurring in the northern part of the country and is an example of the effects of global warming.

Despite the cold front sweeping across other parts of the country, weather forecasts for Playa del Carmen and the rest of the Riviera Maya for the next week are predicting mostly sun with possible occasional rain showers with a continuation of daily high temperatures of 27C.
