Riviera Maya beaches cleared of Sargasso for holiday season

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – The General Direction of the Federal Maritime Zone (ZOFEMAT) has begun extensive maintenance and beach cleaning to prepare for thousands of upcoming visitors.

With the return of the Sargasso earlier in the year, more than 100 people have been clearing the unwanted seagrass from the coastline along the Riviera Maya. Workers with Zoefmat have been busy using both machines and manual tools to remove the grass prior to the arrival of holidaygoers.

Zofemat head, Hugo Uribe Nicolás, explained that “Brigades were formed with the participation of administrative and operational workers who support the daily work carried out by Zofemat maintenance personnel. People are working hard and there is a lot of participation.”

Workers began clearing beach areas last week, ensuring the coastline from Punta Esmeralda to Playacar is in prime condition to receive visitors.
