Report of armed subjects in Playa del Carmen leads to arrest of three

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — UPDATED: Agents of the Municipal Police of Solidaridad arrested three people they found in possession of firearms, ammunition, communication radios and tactical gear.

The three were taken into police custody after a call to 911 reported the sighting of armed people. Agents of la Policía Municipal de Solidaridad made their way to the irregular colony of Campesinos Unidos on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen where they found the trio.

Upon review, police found them in possession of guns and ammunition, communication radios, tactical gear including bullet-proof vests, a drone and two vans.

All of their gear, weapons and the two vehicles were seized. The three were taken to Public Security and from there to the State Attorney General’s Office.

UPDATE: Upon their arrival at the Attorney General’s Office, it was learned that two of the three men were actually retired Air Force Lieutenants. The three were traveling though the irregular community, which generated suspicion among some residents, who called police.

The three men were released as soon as their identities were verified. At a press conference in Cancun, the agents explained that they were protecting a property when residents reported them to police. They did say that although they presented their identification, they did not have their weapons permits on hand.
