Cancun, Q.R. — A new tennis academy by a 10-time French Open champion is set to launch in November.
Rafael Nadal, a 10-time French Open champion, is taking his tennis academies global with the opening of his first international academy, which will be in Cancun.
The Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre Costa Mujeres is set to open in November 2018 and will be his first international school for promising young tennis players. The new facility, which is being constructed in the north portion of Cancun, will offer both tennis classes and weekly programs for both kids and adults.
The new tennis facility will cost around $8 million USD and will be hosted at the Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres hotel as a complement to the Rafa Nadal Academy, located in Mallorca.
“In the main centers of tourism in the world, the first of several centers will be located in Mexico, a country that is close in every way,” he said.
Nadal did not give the names of the other tourist destinations where they may build, but he did say that some will be in Europe and possibly Asia.
“We are seeing the areas where the centers have acceptance and are clear global destinations,” he explained.
The project, which began last year, will have eight clay courts, a 7-a- side soccer field, a paddle court and an exhibition of objects and clothing by the Spanish tennis player.
Nadal said that the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean leave an impact on him every time he visits, adding that Cozumel is one of his favorite destinations to vacation and that Cancun will soon be a new favorite to promote tennis.
