Cancun, Q.R. – As of October 1, the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) will end their summer subsidy program and implement an increase in electricity rates.
Jorge Garcia Castillo, superintendent, explained that during the summer months, a user who consumed 900 kilowatt-hours would have paid about 830 peso plus applicable taxes, but now, that same amount of watt usage will run closer to 2,000 peso. He says that the first 350 kilowatts used cost .94 peso per kilowatt and increases from there. Users who consume 600 kilowatts or more are charged 2.8 peso per kilowatt.
García Castillo says that residents should monitor their electricity usage more carefully now that the subsidy is no longer in place. He recommends checking high usage items such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners.
Summer subsidy was applied from April 1 to September 30, which are considered to be the warmest months in the state and is also when people use the most electricity.
CFE reminds people to make their payments at the CFE office, either in person or at a machine and not via email.
