Punta Esmeralda going for Blue Flag beach status

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — New road works and cleaning have been in motion for the Punta Esmeralda beach areas as they city sets its sights on another Blue Flag beach.

Work is being done on the access road to Punta Esmeralda Beach, which will have bathrooms, showers, security and other services in order for Playa del Carmen to apply for Blue Flag beach status.

The Directorate of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) of Solidaridad reported that there are four public beaches that were nominated to achieve Blue Flag status. The status is awarded by the international organization Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to those who certify water quality, information on the environment, safety and services in these spaces.

The head of Zofemat, Hugo Uribe Nicolás confirmed that Punta Esmeralda is one of the main areas in which work is being done to achieve this recognition.Therefore, work is being carried out on the access road in order to make it safer and more efficient for citizens and tourists.

“This is one of the most visited beaches in the municipality, mainly by citizens of nearby colonies such as Luis Donaldo Colosio and the subdivisions to the west of the city,” he said.

“By certifying it, they will not only enjoy a beautiful beach, but also a safe, friendly and inclusive space,” said the official.

Along with Punta Esmeralda other beaches have been added to the list including Xcalacoco and Playa 88. The city says the results of the new certifed Blue Flag beaches will be announced in May 2018.
