Puerto Progresso welcomes the return of the cruise ship industry

Progresso, Yucatan — After 16 months, Puerto Progresso welcomed the return of the cruise industry with its first ship. Carnival Breeze from Galveston, Texas with 2,825 passengers and 1,367 crew members docked Monday.

The ship arrived at 6:44 a.m. and left at 4:00 p. m. that same day. Upon arrival, the ship was met by the state’s Friends of Health program to ensure health protocols were followed.

“Carnival is and has always been the most important partner we have had in Progreso, and we are already looking forward to the next arrival and the rehabilitation of other routes from companies such as MSC and Disney, which will soon be in Progreso to continue with the reactivation of the entire economy of our state,” said Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal during a speech.

The head of the Tourism Development Secretariat Michelle Fridman pointed out that in 2019, an increase in cruise ship arrivals of more than 20 percent was announced for 2020, however, the pandemic paralyzed tourism throughout the world.

“Our tourism indicators show a gradual growth trend and we will continue working hand-in-hand with the tourism sector until we reach full recovery and return to the growth rate that we had achieved prior to this crisis,” she stressed.
