Puerto Morelos, Q.R. – Puerto Morelos, the newest municipality in the state of Quintana Roo, has unveiled its official shield.
The new shield is the emblem that will represent the municipality in all official dealings. A public contest was held where 32 entries were received, said Francisco Mendoza Reyna, general secretary for the state. Of those entries, 29 met the requirements to enter the competition.
Municipal president, Laura Fernandez Pina, said that the winning emblem was created by David Espinoza Alvarez. His vision of the Puerto Morelos emblem includes a chicozapote tree and water, which represents cenotes and the sea as well as a figure of the barrier reef.
Also included his emblem idea are the area’s history, ecosystems and culture, reflecting the natural heritage as well as its economic activity. Featured on the emblem is the town’s lighthouse that, in 1967, suffered damage during Hurricane Beulah causing it to blow over slightly but not fall. The lighthouse is considered a symbol of strength and so, was included on the emblem.
