Puerto Morelos, Q.R. – Local government officials are preparing a proposal that may see the creation of the 11th municipality in the state of Quintana Roo.
While minor details are still being ironed out, Susana Hurtado Vallejo, Cancun’s deputy mayor, said that the mayor of Puerto Morelos has shown that the town meets all the requirements to become a constitutional council. The town has more than 100 years of history with a sufficient population and infrastructure.
Final approval will be overseen by INEGI, however Pedro Flota Alcocer, president of Gran Comisión, said that it will likely be sometime in October when the final proposal is submitted. Until then, the town of Puerto Morelos will continue to be chaired by a Municipal Council until June 2016. Next year, the town will see its first constitutional mayor.
