Cancun, Q.R. – The official summer tourist season has arrived with Cancun and Puerto Morelos taking top spots for hotel occupancy rates.
This year, Cancun is seeing a 93 percent occupancy rate while hotels in Puerto Morelos are experiencing a 97 percent occupancy rate. Filling the rooms are tourists mostly from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Colombia and 20 different states in Mexico.
These figures show a 2.5 percent increase over the same period as last year.
Carlos Gosselin Maurel, President of the Cancun Hotel Association, says that “Cancun and Puerto Morelos are doing well at the beginning of the holiday season as people from more 10 countries come and stay, occupying a good percentage of the 35,000 rooms between the two destinations.”
He also says that these numbers are great despite the Sargasso, which covers about 98 percent of the 23 kms of Cancun’s coastline.
During this summer holiday season, the average tourist stay is seven days, regardless of where they’ve arrived from. However, more than half of Mexican tourists are arriving with family and spending more on accommodations, shopping malls and water parks.
