Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The municipality of Puerto Morelos is hoping to join other districts in the area by qualifying for Blue Flag beach status.
Puerto Morelos mayor, Laura Fernández Piña, says that the popular seaside town will soon have its first Blue Flag certification. In the meantime, the town will continue with its permanent program of beach and sand cleaning to ensure the destination remains in prime condition for tourism.
“If we offer a clean and safe destination, we are convinced that those tourists who visit us today will return tomorrow with friends and family,” she said.
She also said that because the beaches are one of the most important components of tourism in Puerto Morelos, it is necessary to provide daily maintenance.
Fernández Piña added that in addition to permanent beach cleaning, other municipal administration officials have been given the task of maintaining order along the coastal areas to ensure the greatest level of comfort to visitors.
Blue Flag beach certification recognizes beaches and marinas that have achieved excellence in water quality, environmental management and education, safety and services and comes with standardized protocols and a strict selection, verification and monitoring process.
“We hope to achieve this goal in the short term,” she says, “Being a task that is everyone’s business, including private initiatives and municipal government. This will definitely give a bonus to Puerto Morelos as a world class destination that will attract more vacationers from around the world,” she added.
