Public safety says not enough police to cover municipality

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – The municipality of Solidarity does not have enough police to cover the needs of citizens in the municipality.

Juan Martín Rodríguez Olvera, Municipal Director of Public Safety said, “Today we have a much lower number of police than before. We used to have about 800 elements, and today, we have much less and with a larger population,” he said.

He explained that they are making a daily effort to recruit new police officers that will be better than previous officers. He said the C3 Control and Confidence exams are very strict to the degree that of 104 cadets sent to take the tests, only 10 passed.

“Police work is no longer the last resort. This has changed over the years and now we are looking for this to be strengthened,” he said.

Although Rodríguez Olvera did not provide figures on just how many additional police elements are needed, he did say that increasing the numbers works in coordination with the federal police as well as the army and navy.
