Cozumel, Q.R. – Yucatan Secretary of Tourism, Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, has proposed the reactivating of the Chichen Itza airport with direct flights to Cozumel.
President of the Tourism Business Council, Jorge Escalante Bolio, said that reactivating the air route would certainly capture a percentage of the four million cruise passengers that arrive each year to the state of Quintana Roo.
He said that federal officials will continue to hold talks with the state government to support the proposal. He also noted that in a recent meeting, federal officials were reminded of the plans to invest more than 60 million peso in state infrastructure, with more than 30 million being co-invested in tourism promotions for Tulum.
Escalante Bolio added, “The tourism secretary said during the upcoming Tourism Fair of Guadalajara, President Enrique Peña Nieto will also announce a program to boost travel for Mexicans inside the country since domestic tourism represents 88 percent of gross domestic product ( GDP) of Mexico.”
