Proposal day turns tragic as bride to be, second man drown

Cozumel Q.R. — Two people have died swimming in the sea off a San Miguel resort along the eastern portion of the island of Cozumel.

A woman from the Minnesota along with another tourist from Guadalajara died Thursday when they were swept away by strong currents while swimming at San Martin beach.

Andrew Martinez and his girlfriend Melissa Max were vacationing in Cozumel. It was Andrew’s intention to propose to Melissa that day, however, he did not get the chance. Melissa and another hotel guest, Eduardo, went swimming while Andrew stayed back on the beach.

Watching helplessly, both Eduardo and Melissa were swept out to sea by strong currents. Both Melissa Max and Eduardo Sánchez Estrella from Guadalajara drowned.

The San Martin beach was marked with red flag warnings with signs indicating strong current danger when swimming.
