Profepa closes land being illegally cleared for commercial purposes

Solidaridad, Q.R. — Federal officials have reported the closure of an estate located in the municipality of Solidaridad after citizen complaints.

Federal officers from the Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (Profepa) proceeded to inspect an estate along the Playa del Carmen-Tulum highway after complaints of felled trees. Officers arrived at the property located at kilometer 263 of the federal highway and found it in violation of a change of land use without authorization.

In a public report, federal Profepa officers say the land was being cleared to make way for construction of a commercial lot. However, land owners were not granted permission to clear the more than 907 square meters already cut, nor were they granted permission to turn the land into a commercial lot.

The land owner failed to provide the necessary authorization from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources regarding land use change and was therefore give a Total Temporary Closure of activities and work.
