PRI candidate for Isla Mujeres dies from weekend shooting

Cancun, Q.R. — A political candidate who was shot during a meeting Saturday has died.

Rosely Danilú Magaña Martínez was the victim of a shooting Saturday during a political meeting at a private residence. She was a PRI candidate for the municipality of Isla Mujeres.

Rosely Danilú Magaña Martínez along with PRI activist, Lizbeth Noemí Pasos Sarabia, were shot Saturday afternoon when they were at a political meeting in the colony San Antonio in the mainland municipality of Isla Mujeres, a few meters from the limits with the municipality of Benito Juárez.

The shooting took place around 7:00 pm Saturday at a home on Gastón Alegre Avenue where a political meeting was being held. Reports say two men arrived on board a Cross-style motorcycle where they shot the women.

After the attack, both women were admitted to hospital, however Magaña Martínez died from her injuries at the Galenia Hospital Monday at 11:45 p.m. Lizbeth received a gun shot wound to her thigh and was voluntarily discharged.

According to the witnesses, four shots were heard. The attackers apparently fled to the municipality of Cancún.
