Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – People in the municipality of Solidaridad will be granted the discount rate to travel the waters between Playa del Carmen and Isla Cozumel.
New ferry rates have been approved for residents of Playa del Carmen that will see locals receive a discount to travel from the mainland to the island. Previously, only residents of Isla Cozumel were granted the discount.
On March 3, the Upper House of Congress approved an appeal to the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) to review the differentiated rates being charged for local passengers to travel to and from the mainland and the island.
Senator Luz María Beristain Navarrete said the issue has been ongoing since 2014, and was finally approved on March 3.
“Starting today, the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation will work to verify that the fare for the citizens of Playa del Carmen who require transportation by ferry to the island of Cozumel Island is respected,” she said.
Up until now, only locals with a veritable address and photo credentials on Isla Cozumel were offered the discounted price which range between 100 to 69 peso each way depending on the ferry service used.
Luis Alejandre Morfín, Navega pier manager says, “At this point we are speculating, but we could see up to a 20 percent increase in the influx of domestic tourism, something between 15 and 20 percent.”
He explained that 45 percent of travelers using the federal route between Playa and the island are considered domestic passengers, including those who are residents of Cozumel with the permanent discount. He added that approximately half of those transported to and from the island use Barcos Caribe while the other half utilize the other two ferry options.
