Cancun, Q.R. — A popular area of central Cancun drew crowds as neighbors arrived on the streets to witness a massive fire that lite up the night sky.
The large grass palapa of a business created a scene as the entire top floor of Café del Maya went up in flames. The restaurant, which was located on the corner of the city’s popular Parque de las Palapas, caught fire around 9:30 p.m. causing panic and chaos.
Despite the efforts of firemen, the fire spread throughout the restaurant consuming a total of three rooms and collapsing part of its roof before flames were finally put out.
Inside were 10 guests and two employees, all of whom were safely evacuated from the burning building.
The entire street was tapped off to the curious for an hour-and-a-half before being reopened. Firefighters worked with staff from the Federal Electricity Commission who verified that power lines along the public roadway were not damaged
There was no word on what caused the fire.
