Cancun, Q.R. — A police cruiser in Cancun was riddled with bullets Wednesday night while two on-duty police officers were inside the car.
The patrol unit, belonging to the State Police, was hailed with bullets at the intersection of Avenida Andrés Quintana Roo and Kinik Avenue in Cancún.
One of the two police officers inside the car was injured as a result of the attack carried out by two gunmen. The gunmen fled aboard an Aveo model vehicle and remain at large.
The attack occurred at approximately 10:25 p.m. when the assassins shot at the unit in which two police officers (a male and female) were traveling.
A witness said the patrol unit was circulating along the avenue when gunmen from a compact Aveo car suddenly began shooting at the police car, however, the police tried to steer away from the spray of bullets but ended up stopped.
At that point, two gunmen from the car got out and again, began shooting at the police cruiser, hitting the male police officer, who was the driver of the unit.
The wounded police man was identified as 33-year-old Carlos Manuel. Mr. Manuel received wounds in his upper leg and shoulder and was transferred to hospital in stable condition. The police woman was not injured.
