Police take out counterfeiting ring

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – Three suspects belonging to a counterfeit ring have been arrested in Playa del Carmen following an incident at a local hotel.

Agents from the Municipal Tourist Police were called to the Blue Parrot hotel in central Playa del Carmen after the hotel manager detected counterfeit money was being used to pay for a hotel room.

The manager called the Municipal Tourist Police who arrived at the hotel and found the suspects carrying 13 500 peso bills and seven 100 peso bills. Those arrested ranged in age from 25 to 32 and were all from District Federal.

A woman believed to be working with the suspects was also arrested. All four were handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office along with the counterfeit money.

In October of last year, authorities encountered a similar problem when several citizens said their 50 peso bills had been declined by local Playa del Carmen shops. Police warned local businesses to be aware of counterfeit 50 peso bills that were reportedly in circulation in central Playa del Carmen. There is no word if the two incidences are related.
