Police stop driver for traffic violation, discover 2 tons of drugs

Nuevo León, Mexico — A traffic violation along a highway in the state of Nuevo León led police to the discovery of a two-ton shipment of marijuana.

On Saturday, federal police stopped a transport truck for a traffic violation. The driver of the truck said he was carrying a load of paint. The National Security Commission says the surveillance check took place along the Matehuala-Saltillo highway.

Although the truck driver said he was carrying paint, federal agents detected the intense smell of marijuana. Upon inspection, they discovered a load of rectangular packages wrapped in cinnamon tape. The drug haul weighed approximately two tons.

The truck driver as arrested and handed over to the Public Ministry who will investigate the origin and destination of the drug.

The driver was stopped for not wearing his seat belt.
