Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A confrontation between police and residents of an illegal settlement in the west end of Playa del Carmen has left one dead and two injured.
The confrontation broke out Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when police responded to complaints from the irregular settlement of In House in the city’s west. Reports say that a group from La Guadalupana and Nuevo Noh Bec subdivisions arrived at In House to forcefully remove those living there.
Witnesses say that the inhabitants of In House defended themselves with machetes and stones, which resulted in the arrival of more than 20 police elements.
Fully armed municipal, federal and ministerial police arrived at In House just off Constituyentes Avenue at the height of the Mission de las Flores where they say gunfire erupted among the nearly 100 residents that resulted in the death of one woman.
Although the intention of police was to track down aggressors, heavy rains restricted visibility. However, during the two hour standoff, six people were arrested and two injured, one of which was a police officer.
