Police continue to sweep Cancun beaches of illegal activity

Cancun, Q.R. — Police in Cancun continue to clear the city’s public beaches of illegal activity with another sweep. On Saturday, authorities arrived at Playa Langosta with elements of the Navy, Guardia National and municipal police to reinforce their Safe Beach operation.

The Prosecutor’s Office stressed that the objective is “to recover the public spaces that were occupied to commit crimes,” adding that both civil and military authorities have reinforced their control and surveillance operations on the busiest beaches.

The agency pointed out that busy Cancun beaches such as Playa Tortugas, Delfines and Playa Gaviota Azul have seen the dismantling of illegal structures set up for the explicit purpose of criminal activity.

The structures built were used to provide services to tourists, but were also used for illegal activities. The agency says they will continue with beach sweeps to recover the public areas and ensure safer beaches, adding that the operation is likely to be extended to Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
