Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A currency exchange shop in central Playa del Carmen was offering 50.52 peso to the US dollar, an exchange rate that caused mass lineups.
More than 100 people lined up to get in on the unheard of rate of exchange being offered by a currency exchange booth on the corner of Constituyentes and Playa del Carmen.
It was around 5:30 in the afternoon when social media began buzzing about Money Exchange offering 50.52 peso per US dollar. Word also quickly spread through local taxi drivers who communicate mostly by radio.
The exchange rate was only offered for two hours, however, once staff inside realized their error. While several lucky locals managed to cash in on the high rate, others who were waiting in line with their US dollars in hand did not feel as lucky when the company closed its windows.
Several people called for false advertising, demanding the company honor the advertised rate and involving the Federal Attorney of Consumer Protection (Profeco).
Lights to the establishment were turned off as the exchange booth closed saying there would not be any additional currency exchanges until further notice.
