Cancun, Q.R. — The touristy sun and sand destination city of Cancun has fallen from first to sixth place this year in the category of most popular as Playa del Carmen scoops up first place.
The city, while still popular, was knocked down to sixth by other resort destinations including Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and Tulum. According to Tripadvisor’s The 10 Most Popular Destinations in Mexico, Playa del Carmen now takes first place for most popular destination while Playa Norte on Isla Mujers scored first for The Best 10 Beaches in Mexico.
The international city of Cancun has attracted millions of visitors in its 40 years and remains a top spot, however, one hotel entrepreneur says that he has seen a decrease in future hotel reservations when compared to figures from last year.
The Undersecretary of Tourism Promotion of Quintana Roo, Maximo Garcia Rocha, on the other hand, says these preferences and profiles have to be analyzed by segment, because the destination registers a 4 percent increase in the occupation rate compared to last year.
According to Tripadvisor, Cancun ranks sixth in the most popular destination category, while Cozumel ranked fifth and Tulum, fourth place.
