Playa del Carmen police say 7 arrested in failed kidnapping attempt

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A group of seven have been arrested in Playa del Carmen after what police are calling a failed kidnapping attempt.

La Secretaría de Seguridad Pública de Solidaridad announced the arrest of seven individuals involved in the crime of kidnapping of two people. Along with their arrest, police say they also secured two vehicles and a firearm with nine cartridges.

The arrests resulted from a report Saturday afternoon of the forceful removal of two people by armed persons in the north Xcalacoco beach area of Playa del Carmen. Municipal elements responded to the call, however, the moment the offending vehicles were seen, the drivers began to speed in an attempt to evade police capture.

Police were able to stop one of the two involved cars at a set of traffic lights along Playa del Carmen Boulevard by closing in on the vehicle. The second car was followed and also eventually stopped. From the first car, two people got out who asked for help, telling police they had been kidnapped.

A total of seven people from the two vehicles were taken into police custody and reserved for the State Attorney General’s Office who will determine their legal status.
