Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The municipality of Solidaridad has created a new Department of Internal Affairs which will oversee citizen complaints against police.
The new department is part of the already-existing Department of Public Security which already has five citizen complaints against police. The complaints, which will be reviewed, will proceed to the Council of Justice for the final outcome.
Juan Martín Rodríguez Olvera, Playa del Carmen police chief, said that the new department and procedures will reinforce surveillance of the police department as well as control on human rights. So far, five complaints have been filed against the police of which four were found to be reasonable with the fifth complaint being submitted to the Council of Justice where police sanctions will be determined.
Rodríguez Olvera added that the new department will strengthen citizen complaints with the presentation of evidence. He also noted that all patrol vehicles are equipped with GPS, so police locations are known at all times.
