Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A local journalist who ran a Facebook news page was shot and killed in central Playa del Carmen early Tuesday.
Rubén Pat, a controversial journalist who reported mostly on police incidents and social complaints, was shot and killed as he was leaving Arre bar. Preliminary reports say that Pat was shot around 5:48 a.m. outside the bar on Avenida Juárez, between Avenida 20 and Avenda 25.
Police confirmed that the deceased was Rubén Pat, director of the Playa News Weekly social media news page. Solidaridad City Council issued a statement in which it acknowledged Pat was murdered.Rubén Pat Cahuich,
“Municipal Police have made the corresponding protocols with staff of the Attorney General of the State (PGE) to begin the relevant investigations,” they said in their statement.
Members of Solidaridad City Council expressed its deepest condolences to his family and friends, and reiterated their commitment to freedom of expression and journalism.
The Attorney General of the State, Miguel Angel Pech Cen, reported that they continue to investigate where Rubén Pat lost his life, adding that they do not have additional information to provide.
However, Cristina Torres Gómez, mayor of Playa del Carmen, says that they are going to investigate why people were inside a closed bar after hours.
“We are going to do the administrative part as City Council of why one person, or several people, were inside a closed bar because the closing is at 3:00 in the morning for patrons and 4:00 in the morning for employees,” she said.
Pat was reportedly shot at 5:45 a.m. as he was leaving the Arre bar in the city’s center and getting into his vehicle. He was accompanied by a female friend who was unharmed. Police secured five bullet casings from the scene.
Pat helped run the social media news page called Playa News. He is the second reporter from the Playa News page killed this summer. In June, José Guadalupe Chan Dzib was gunned down inside La Baticueva bar in Felipe Carrillo Puerto. He was also a reporter and collaborator for the news page.
