Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – Playa del Carmen recieves its first Blue Flag beach status.

Beginning July, the newly awarded Blue Flag will be hoisted on Playa 88 in Playa del Carmen after the beach met the criteria for being Blue Flag certified.

Director General of the Federal Maritime Zone (ZOFEMAT), Hugo Uribe Nicolás, who on behalf of the Municipality went to Vallarta for the certificate, said that the municipality of Solidaridad tried to obtain a Blue Flag for 10 years, however, the current administration started management in October and now has it.

“One of the commitments of the municipal president is the certification of beaches, so announcing today the first Blue Flag in favor of the inhabitants and visitors of the municipality of Solidaridad. This is a sample of the constant work that has been done and we continue with actions to obtain more certifications,” he said.

Playa del Carmen met all four criteria to obtain certification of Playa 88 including quality of sea water, information and environmental education, environmental management and safety and facilities for the enjoyment of visitors to the coastal zone.

“Playa 88 is inclusive, has access for people with disabilities and has emergency vehicle access if necessary. There is a tower and staff of lifeguards, surveillance by the tourist police and a module to provide information to tourism,” said Hugo Uribe Nicolás.

Uribe Nicolás noted that this achievement was possible with the support of citizens since at Playa 88 there is a continuous cleaning of beaches with support of volunteers in addition transplanting dune vegetation.

He said that obtaining the Blue Flag certification of beaches is part of the actions of the Municipal Development Plan (PMD) 2016-2018, contemplated in the indicator Conservation and rehabilitation of beaches, within the Guiding Axis: Sustainable Urban Development.
