Playa del Carmen driver serious but stable after bus impales van

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The driver of a van was left in serious condition after his windshield was impaled by the back of a bus. Police responded to the 6:00 a.m. accident near the Villas del Sol subdivision of Playa del Carmen.

When they arrived, they found the driver of a white van trapped and with serious injuries. Preliminary reports say the driver of the van was traveling at a high rate of speed when he attempted to go around the parked school bus, but instead, slammed into the back. The impact from the hit caused the bus to be projected into a truck in front.

Firemen were called to the scene to free the man from the twisted metal, which authorities reported, took more than 30 minutes. Once removed, he was rushed to hospital in serious, but stable condition. He was the only person listed as injured in the accident.

Police also had the task of dealing with backed up traffic as two lanes were shut for more than an hour while firemen worked to free the man and tow trucks arrived to remove the damaged vehicles.
