Playa del Carmen celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — More than 12,000 people gathered in front of city hall last night to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day.

Civic Plaza, 28 de Julio, was packed as locals and tourists gathered to take in the annual Independence Day event with the Grito de Independencia de México.

The cry ¡Viva México!, was headed by Municipal President, Cristina Torres Gómez from the balcony of city hall. From the balcony of the Municipal Palace, Cristina Torres Gómez also remembered the heroes who gave themselves for the country including Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, Vicente Guerrero, Leona Vicario, Andrés Quintana Roo, José María Morelos y Pavón, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.

The plaza square was filled with events that included food, dance, live music and fireworks. The evening ended with Mexican singer, Alicia Villarreal who sang the national anthem. September 16 is the national holiday marking Mexico’s Independence.
