Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The municipality of Solidaridad celebrated its 25th anniversary on Saturday with government officials, live music and speeches in front of a large crowd.
The municipality’s first female mayor, Cristina Torres Gómez, was on hand to deliver the opening speech, noting that Playa del Carmen is a great city because of all who reside in the municipality of Solidaridad.
“No matter where we come from, where in the world we are born, it does not matter what we do, Solidaridad is great because of the people”, she said.
Regardless of where the people are from, all residents of Solidaridad have something in common she says, which is the desire to excel and the refusal to be defeated.
“That, friends, makes worthy and full of pride to live in Playa del Carmen, to live in this beautiful land of opportunity and natural wonders. With the work of all, Solidaridad has recovered and is on the path toward greatness.
“We are on the right path and we will continue moving toward a more inclusive community. Today, Solidaridad left behind that small fishing village and moved forward to a future of development. Today, this development will continue to be our challenge,” she added.
“Today we celebrate 25 years of reaching goals and obtaining dreams, but those dreams do not end here,” she said. “It continues for Solidaridad, for its people, for those who expect from us our best effort because Solidaridad is worth it.”
Numerous other government officials were also on hand at the celebration including state governor, Carlos Joaquín González, who was mayor of the municipality 12 years before. The event finished with an evening of live music.
