Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – For one hour, most of Playa del Carmen saw darkness as many of the city’s major businesses took part in Earth Hour.
Playa del Carmen was only one of the cities in nearly 170 countries that participated in the annual event. Approximately 300 people participated in a downtown rally at city hall that helped bring awareness to the event by sharing tips on how to save electricity.
From 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., numerous private homes as well as business turned out their lights to acknowledge Earth Hour. In total darkness was also Plaza del Julio and the Municipal Palace (city hall), major businesses and 22 sports domes throughout the municipality.
