Playa del Carmen applies for two Blue Flags

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – The municipality of Solidaridad is applying for two Blue Flag beach status certifications for the city of Playa del Carmen.

The initial Blue Flag status certification for the city was for Punta Esmeralda, however, city officials have now included the popular Founders Park.

Municipal president Cristina Torres Gómez said that there are two beaches that are looking into having such a certificate. “We are in search of it (Blue Flag) and about to announce it,” she said.

She also said that she does not think the sargazo will be a problem in the final deciding factor. “We are working on the issue of cleaning the sargazo. They have seen it and I do not believe it is an obstacle because it is a natural issue on the coast of Quintana Roo.”

Torres Gómez noted that even if one of the two applications is accepted, that would be the first for the Riviera Maya.

“They already have the official paperwork. The files have been sent. There may be difficulty in the service part because there are no showers, in one, and another is missing sanitary services,” she explained.
