Playa del Carmen applies for first Blue Flag beach status

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – Playa del Carmen is gearing up to apply for its first Blue Flag beach status in the municipality of Solidaridad.

The area chosen will be the beach on 88th Street next to the Paradisus Hotel. This area is in the colony of Luis Donaldo Colosio, which is maintained by the Federal Maritime Zone (Zofemat). Due to the fact the area is already equipped with public restrooms, showers and a lifeguard tower, Zofemat officials are getting ready to request the certification.

Blue Flag status certification is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education out of Denmark. The certification acknowledges beaches that make a continual effort to be environmentally responsible.

There are currently 28 Blue Flag beaches throughout Mexico. For Quintana Roo, the list of Blue Flag certified beaches includes Ballenas (Cancun), Balneario Municipal de Bacalar, Chac Mool (Cancun), Dolphins (Cancun), Marlin (Cancun), El Niño (Cancun), Las Perlas (Cancun) and Playa Centro (Isla Mujeres).
