Akumal, Q.R. – What began as a peaceful protest ended in clashes between citizens and security officials at Akumal.
Several people, including four policemen, were injured during the Sunday evening protest as private citizens once again marched against the installation of a fence that prohibits free access to the beach at Akumal Bay.
The violence began around 7:00 p.m. when security officials protecting the fenced area began throwing stones to ward off the protesters. The scene quickly escalated as protesters began tearing down the barbed-wire fence that was erected to prevent passage into the bay.
Molotov cocktails, sticks and rocks were used during the riot as protesters and Akumal security officials clashed. Although police were on scene, they did not get involved. In the end, two police cars were burnt while a few nearby parked cars suffered damage. One palapa was also set on fire.
The march against the privatization of the public beach area has been ongoing for months. Six young people were arrested on Sunday evening in what has become the latest protest against the closure.
