Cozumel, Q.R. – Images of an exhausted horse lying in the streets of Cozumel ended with the animal being seized by the Department of Ecology and Environment.
John the horse was seen by hundreds via social media feeds as he collapsed from exhaustion and undernourishment this week in Cozumel. The animal was used to pull a tourist carriage through the streets of the popular city.
Rafael Chacón Díaz, director of the Department of Ecology and Environment, said the horse had collapsed due to being overworked and poorly fed. The animal was transferred to the animal control center of Cozumel where he was examined and began recovery.
He explained that these types of situations are not uncommon on the island being that there are 15 two-wheeled horse-driven carriages and only one inspector. While regulations are in place to ensure carriage drivers respect parking spaces as well as cleaning the areas they occupy, there is no mention or penalties to protect the animals.
