Opening of state’s Ichkabal archaeological site delayed

Cancun, Q.R. — The opening of the Ichkabal archaeological zone will not happen this year and has been delayed due to lack of structure.

Deborah Angulo Villanueva, president of the Association of Hotels and Motels for the central and southern zone, said that although it is a long-term project, the sector lacks information in regards to the new site.

She points out that it is not complete and that there is no set date for completion even though this year, 10 to 15 million peso has been allocated for the Ichkabal archaeological area.

At a press conference, the hotel representative said that this week Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Tourism Promotion Trust of the Riviera Maya, will arrive to confirm the head for the new Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo body.

His visit is in response to a complaint from the sector for lack of information on this new council. Those involved in state tourism will be informed about its possible date of operation, structure and link to the southern area, among other issues.

Angulo Villanueva says that one of the first points that will be discussed is to increase tourism to the southern part of the state, noting that although the average stay has gone up two two nights from one, it is still far from the three to four nights as seen in other nearby destinations.
