Officials evaluate Mahahual, Costa Maya sargasso situation

Mahahual, Q.R. — Vice Admiral Enrique Flores Morado, the general coordinator of the sargasso program in Quintana Roo, made a tour of five points of Costa Maya between Mahahual and the community of Xcalak to verify the affectation and plan a strategy.

The tour allowed them to see the degree of the problem first-hand and determine equipment needs as well as personnel requirements needed to remove the sargasso from its beaches.

Officials toured the areas of the fishermen’s wharf of Mahahual, Rio Bermejo, Maya Luna Hotel, Maya Chan Beach, Margarita del Sol and the Xahuaxol junction, determining the areas most critical as a result of the arrival of seaweed.

While officials found that most of the beaches were clean, they saw that shallow swimming waters were not. Flores Morado affirmed that coordinated efforts of businessmen and residents of Mahahual are necessary to combat the problem.

He clarified that the navy will only be responsible for removing the sargasso from the sea to prevent it from reaching the beaches, saying that it will be responsibility of the municipality and the concessionaires to remove what reaches the beach and shallow waters.

He acknowledged that the impact they will have from the sea will be very low because there will be a lot of sargassum that they will not be able to collect, which will reach the beach areas.

“Resources are limited. We do not have money, so it is necessary to organize ourselves. The idea is that we do it in an integral way. In many occasions, what is needed is will,” he said.
