Cancun, Q.R. — Airport authorities have announced the addition of a Terminal 5 for the Cancun International Airport.
The Airport Group of the Southeast (Asur) says that due to the constant increase in passengers, they have begun preparations to begin work on the addition of another terminal. The new addition, which will be Terminal 5, would be the latest in updates to the Cancun International Airport.
The constant growth in passenger figures shows the need for the additional terminal, which Asur says, will be an investment in excess of $300 million USD.
This announcement is part of the company’s investment plan for the period 2019-2023, which will also include upgrades to the Cozumel airport since it too, has recorded a steady increase in passenger traffic.
The hint of a possible Terminal 5 came last year when the Cancun airport’s new Terminal 4 was inaugurated by President Enrique Peña Nieto. At the time, the possibility was mentioned, adding that if constructed, it would allow the airport to handle an additional 9 million passengers.
The work for Terminal 5 at the Cancun International Airport is set to begin toward the end of this year or early 2019. The new Maya Train project, that has been set in motion by president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will also include the Cancun International Airport.
