New CFE rates have Playa del Carmen businesses protesting

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The National Chamber of Commerce in Playa del Carmen is preparing a demonstration to protest the adjustment in electricity consumption rates for this year.

José Luis Hernández Barragán, president of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Canaco), says the new Energy Reform is only hurting CFE customers saying that on a national level, the 264 chambers that make up the Confederation rejected this position derived from the Energy Reform.

“We have no other option other than to close businesses and end sources of employment or encourage a suspension of payments,” explaining that he met with the confederation and the more than 200 businesses in the country are against this rate adjustment.

“We are against the readjustment because they only give an explanation with algorithms, words that are not beneficial.”

Hernández Barragán says people are owed an explanation, adding that before the electric tariffs are increased, businesses will have to balance those increases with price hikes to customers, which is inflation, he says.

“The Reformation did not benefit us at all,” he said. “We are disappointed with this energy reform that did nothing to benefit the user, on the contrary, it hurt us.”

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has announced the rates to be charged for the public electric power distribution service during the period from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. The new rates were published in the Official Gazette of the Federació (DOF) Wednesday.
