Nearly one hundred sea turtles killed in accident

Cancun, Q.R. — A devastating blow to Cancun’s sea turtle season as nearly 100 sea turtle hatchlings are killed.

A pickup truck that was carrying baby sea turtles overturned on a Cancun road, killing nearly 100 hatchlings. The turtles were being transported by two environmental conservation coordinators for the Palace Resorts Hotel along Coba Avenue when the accident happened.

The accident occurred at 6:45 p.m. when the woman driving the truck apparently fell asleep at the wheel in front of Plaza Hollywood. The truck hit the central ridge, overturned and caught fire.

The two conservation coordinators suffered only minor injuries.
