Navy seizes vessel, 3 tons of cocaine off coast of Mahahual

Mahahual, Q.R. — Three men and nearly three tons of cocaine have been seized in waters off the coast of Mahahual. The seizure and arrests were announced by the Secretariat of the Navy who say, in coordination with the Secretariat of National Defense, the packages and men were secured.

Navy personnel reported on September 1, they saw the vessel moving at high speed and in an unusual way approximately 85 nautical miles (136 kilometres) east of Mahahual. With help of a Persuader-type aircraft, an MI-17 helicopter and defender and interceptor-type surface units, they were successful in capturing and boarding the vessel.

The Secretariat of the Navy says on board the small vessel were 74 packages of cocaine with an approximate weight of 2,960 kilograms. The three crew were arrested. The cargo, the vessel, as well as the alleged offenders have been be placed at the disposal of the authorities.
