Navy returns 10 to land after tourist boat fails off Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Ten people were returned to shore Friday after their vessel failed. The Secretary of the Navy reported the rescue of the boat and its crew after coming upon them during a maritime surveillance patrol in the vicinity of Playa del Carmen.

Members of the navy located the vessel drifting in waters approximately 1.5 nautical miles (three kilometers) south of Playa del Carmen. Vessel La Muneca was found drifting with her 10-member crew after experiencing engine failure.

Towing support was provided to La Muneca due to prevailing area weather conditions.

“Because of the foregoing, and in order to safeguard human life at sea, the aforementioned coastal patrol proceeded to provide towing support to the vessel, to bring it closer to the coast due to the prevailing weather conditions in the area,” Semar reported in a statement.

The failed vessel was a service boat that had set our with two Mexican nationals and eight foreign tourists.
