Cancun, Q.R. – Already in the first quarter of the year, 37 forest fires have been recorded in the state of Quintana Roo with Othon P. Blance being the most affected area.
State fire officials from the National Forest Commission (Conafor) say that 7,069 hectares of forest have already burned in 2017, a figure that far exceeds the 32 forest fires and 2,000 hectares destroyed by fire during the same four months in 2016.
In the southern municipality of Bacalar, seven forest fires burned 3,000 hecatres of land, while in the northern zone, five forest fires were recorded – two in Solidaridad, two in Beniro Juarez and one in Puerto Morelos.
State unit manager of Conafor Rafael Leon Negrete, noted that although drought has played an important factor in the increase of forest fires this year, authorities warn that many of the fires are provoked.
