More than 60 animals die in Costa Maya fire

Bacalar, Q.R. — A fire at a swine farm in the Maya Balam community resulted in the death of more than 60 pigs trapped in pens.

According to authorities, they received the report of a fire Saturday morning just before 6:00 a.m. on a pig farm at Maya Balam. Firemen responded to the call to find the farm owner and nearby neighbors trying to douse flames.

Despite efforts, the pens completely burned and a total of 67 animals died.

The owner of the farm, 36-year-old Pascual Pablo Bernabé, told authorities that Wednesday, he had been threatened by locals that his farm would be burned. From this, the State Attorney General’s Office began an investigation.
