More than 40,000 per day expected for Riviera Maya

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — More than 40,000 tourists per day are expected during the Riviera Maya summer holiday season which began July 8.

The figures were reported by the General Directorate of  Solidarity Tourism who says that the hotel occupancy rate will exceed 90 percent over the next few weeks as people continue to arrive for their summer vacation.

Rocío Ocampo Colmenares, head of Solidarity Tourism, said that the summer vacation period for Riviera Maya runs from July 8 to August 13. During this time, it is anticipated that around 40,000 people per day will visit between Playa del Carmen and Tulum generating resources in excess of 1.6 billion peso.

“The tourist dynamic of our municipality shows that the flow of visitors, national and international, favor Playa del Carmen,” said Ocampo Colmenares.

“In June of this year, there was an increase of 3.7 percentage points compared to 2016, even taking into account that we have 2,087 more rooms,” he noted.

According to statistics from the Tourist Promotion Trust of the Riviera Maya and Cozumel (FPTRMyC), hotel occupancy in Playacar is already at 92.1 percent.

Overall, Playa del Carmen has an 84.9 percent occupany rate, while small hotels are currently reporting an occupancy rate of 69 percent. The all-inclusive hotels are now at 90.9 percent.

Ocampo Colmenares also noted that easy connectivity has made the area a hot spot, with easy access to other regions such as Cancun, Holbox, Cozumel, Akumal, Tulum, Mahahual and Bacalar.

The main visitors to the region this time of year are families taking summer holidays.
