Cancun, Q.R. — Members of the Mexican military have taken over a highway checkpoint that enters the city of Cancun.
The roadway leading into Cancun from Mérida has been taken over by military police of the Tenth Military Police Brigade. Their presence at the checkpoint has remained in place for several days.
With their green berets, military men and women have been carrying out vehicle inspections in search of drugs and weapons entering the city, however, municipal police continue to take charge of vehicle inspections leaving the city of Cancun, heading toward Mérida.
The arrival of the military along with their implementation into things such as vehicle inspections is part of the city’s project to increase security.
Prior to their arrival, a handful of municipal police manned both sides of the checkpoint.
